getting started, overview

Hi, and welcome to my guide on getting started with meditation and mindfulness. This guide is split into steps that are designed to be practised in order; each step adds something new to practise, so my recommendation is to read step 1, practise it until it’s part of your routine, and only then move on to step 2. When it comes to training the mind, it seems like a common approach is to just consume an endless amount of self-help content, do zero practise, and then become increasingly frustrated as nothing seems to improve (I did exactly this for about two years). I think the flaw in this approach is much more obvious with physical skills: reading a thousand books about swimming technique won’t do much for our ability to swim if we never get in the pool. Whilst, I think reading, talking, and listening are great for coming across new ideas and techniques, it’s consistent practise that leads to lasting change.

There’s no rush, and no requirement to “finish” everything in this guide; I would work up to wherever you feel comfortable and come back down a step if it feels a bit too much – it's not a competition. If you are unsure or struggling and want someone to talk to, please do reach out at any time - talkingwithtom@outlook.com.

Although it’s not needed, I would recommend checking out the introduction page before starting as it addresses some common myths and misconceptions about mindfulness.
